Of all the Elvis songs that have had an impact on my life, this is one that will forever remind me of my importance. In high school, I was dating an abusive guy. Abusive in every way of the word. He made me feel so bad about myself that I ended up hurting myself in return due to his disappointment in me. I was in 10^th grade and I could not understand what was happening in my life. After watching so many shows indicating the same situation I was under and I never understood why girls never walked away. Completely distraught over my situation and hiding what had been happening from everyone, I found myself turning to music.

Original 1964 Version

I can remember the day perfectly; I worked at McDonalds after school most days. Getting home around 11, I could never sleep. I grabbed my iPod and chose all Elvis songs and put it on shuffle. The first song that started playing was It Hurts Me. I listened to it over and over again, taking in every word Elvis was signing. The next day at school, I tried to talk to him during our lunch. The next thing I knew, there was a chair being hurled at me. The entire cafeteria was staring at me as I tried not to cry. I decided to walk over to him and break up with him because of this song. It hurt everyone around me to see myself going through this and I could not let it happen anymore.

1968 Version

To this day, when I listen to this song I have to hold back tears. I am so thankful for this song and how it helped me. Originally released in 1964, Elvis rerecorded it for the television special in 1968. Even with the campy fight scene, it still gives me chills.
